Approximately 10-20 minutes from Ocean Isle Beach, Holden Beach, and Sunset Beach (respectively) lies the town of Shallotte NC. Consuming 5.4 square miles, with a population of 2210, Shallotte takes pride in its small town charm that still offers the convenience of a city. HISTORY Incorporated March 6, 1899, and with settlement dating back to the mid-1700s, Shallotte is often referred to as the “commercial hub” of Brunswick County. It’s been said that a traveler who crossed the now Shallotte River by ferry referred to it as “Charlotte” River which later translated into Shallotte hence the name. The “Shallotte Vision Plan” is geared toward the revitalization of downtown Shallotte and includes improving access to the Shallotte River as well as visibility, creating a “walkable downtown”, and development of residential and commercial land. Shallotte promotes riverside preservation of historical buildings and is working to transform a number of riverfront brick face buildings into specialty shops and restaurants.
